There has been an increase in the awareness of environmental issues among the masses in recent times, and this is why many are switching to renewable sources of energy. The use of renewable sources of energy is not new; in fact, the use of non-renewable resources has been around for centuries. However, the main reason for switching to renewable sources of energy like wind power or solar power is that these resources do not pollute the environment in any way, unlike nonrenewable sources of energy like coal and petroleum, which pose serious threats to the environment in one way or another. With the increasing concerns of people about the environment, one cannot blame them for wanting to do something about it.
A renewable source also called a non-fossil fuel, is an organic material that will replenish itself to replace the part totally depleted by use and consumption, both through biological reproduction or normal geological replenishment, in a finite amount of time on a human time scale. The major advantage of using renewable energy sources is that they do not cause any sort of pollution to the environment. One major disadvantage, however, is that the production of fossil fuels leads to the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which in turn aggravate global warming. Although the production of carbon dioxide is out of control, the sources of carbon do still remain in the environment and pose a problem.

Using natural gas and oil is one way of replacing fossil fuels and reducing the use of natural resources. In comparison, the production of natural gas and oil is very cheap when compared to the production of coal and petroleum, as these are the most expensive natural resources around. Another advantage that natural gas and oil offer is that they are readily available, whereas coal and petroleum tend to be far more difficult to find and so are far more expensive.
There are many different sources of energy that are easily available and very cost-effective. Hydroelectricity is one way of power plants convert water into energy useful for industry. You can even generate electricity from your own rainwater if you live in an area with a steady supply of water. Wind power is another popular way of producing electricity without having to rely on fossil fuels. Geothermal energy is generated underground using heat from the earth stored below its surface.
Biofuels are now becoming more popular as an alternative way to power our cars. These fuels have been created from organic matter such as vegetable oil or biogas gas. Ethanol was the first biofuel to gain commercial interest because it is made from corn, although other crops such as switchgrass and alfalfa can be used as well. Anethanol is produced from the fermentation of starch which would otherwise not be suitable as a fuel. These renewable sources of energy production are both gasoline and ethanol.
Another alternative energy source is solar power. If you are interested in using this form of energy, there are several ways you can do it. Photovoltaic panels can be installed on your home or business to generate electricity to supplement the sun’s energy. If you do not want to install panels, you can use solar-driven lights as an alternative to expensive electrical lighting. Lights like these can be found at most hardware stores and from department stores.
There are many other forms of renewable energy like geothermal energy, wind power, and hydropower. These methods are great for eliminating some of your household or business electric bill costs, although they do rely on fossil fuels and gas. These sources of energy are environmentally friendly as they do not release pollutants into the air like fossil fuels.
The process of converting our energy needs to nonrenewable resources will not stop with the conservation of fossil fuels. If we want to truly solve our energy problems, then we must look to all of our energy options, including the renewable sources of energy mentioned above. We have to realize that the energy conservation process cannot be stopped until we address the issue of nonrenewable resources. Once we do, our energy needs can be effectively satisfied without any environmental impact.
